Influence of Increased Freshwater Inflow on Nitrogen and Phosphorus Budgets in a Dynamic Subtropical Estuary, Barataria Basin, Louisiana

چکیده

Coastal Louisiana is currently experiencing high rates of wetland loss and large-scale ecosystem restoration being implemented. One the largest most novel projects a controlled sediment diversion, proposed to rebuild sustain wetlands by diverting sediment- nutrient-rich water from Mississippi River. However, impact this diversion on nutrient budget receiving basin largely unknown. A quality model was developed investigate planned Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Barataria Basin (herein referred as ‘the Basin’). The results indicate that will increase TN TP pools about 38% 17%, respectively, even with loadings >300%. Water suggest nutrients in be mitigated increased advection transport (i.e., decreased residence time ~170 days ~40 days, leading greater flushing) removal via assimilation, denitrification, settling within Basin. Advection resulted higher than other processes, such uptake or denitrification. Approximately 25% additional loading 30% were processed through assimilation phytoplankton vegetation, burial sediment/soils. These budgets help better understand how project may change future ecological conditions estuaries coastal near-shore northern Gulf Mexico.

Land-cover change in upper Barataria Basin estuary, Louisiana, 1972-1992: increases in Wetland area.

The Barataria Basin, Louisiana, USA, is an extensive wetland and coastal estuary system of great economic and intrinsic value. Although high rates of wetland loss along the coastal margin of the Barataria Basin have been well documented, little information exists on whether freshwater wetlands in the upper basin have changed. Our objectives were to quantify land-cover change in the upper basin ...

Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus budgets for a shallow subtropical coastal embayment (Moreton Bay, Australia)

Average annual carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus budgets were constructed for Moreton Bay. Primary production was the dominant source of carbon (by two orders of magnitude), N fixation was the dominant source of nitrogen, and point sources were the dominant source of phosphorus to the bay. About 41% of the nitrogen and 70% of the phosphorus entering Moreton Bay was exported to the ocean, and abo...

critical period effects in foreign language learning:the influence of maturational state on the acquisition of reading, writing, and grammar in english as a foreign language

since the 1960s the age effects on learning both first and second language have been explored by many linguists and applied linguists (e.g lennerberg, 1967; schachter, 1996; long, 1990) and the existence of critical period for language acquisition was found to be a common ground of all these studies. in spite of some common findings, some issues about the impacts of age on acquiring a second or...
